THE RED CARPET

The Porsche 550 Spyder’s door swings open, and I toss the keys to the Valet. “Keep it close,” I tell him as I round the corner and quickly take Liz’s hand before one heel can hit the red carpet.

She glares down at our joined fingers, but I ignore the ill gesture. I understand that she doesn’t trust me, and that I hurt her. The thing is there is no time machine, and I can’t go back and undo what I’ve already done.

Her thinking I haven’t paid attention to her, to the men in her life, the breakups, the books she wrote—one of them about me, is what is best. My family is on the brink of ruin, and she’s not in a good place. If I tell her the truth, she’ll more than likely hate the one person she trusts and adores the most—Truman—her brother.

This girl is from my past. I shouldn’t care that I hurt her. Yet, I do. I have an agenda, though, and it doesn’t involve atonement. Still, helping to save Catalina is proving impossible, but helping save her might not be.

If gambling is the way I can try, I’m willing to do this with her, hopeless situation or not. I mean, come on, if I thought I could take a million dollars and spin it to fifty million, I’d have already done it and saved the world, my world, anyway. Casino de Monte-Carlo is many things, but a genie in a bottle is not one of them.

“What game is your favorite?” she asks, her patterned chiffon minidress and matching burgundy thigh-high boots keeping pace with me as she takes the twenty or so steps by my side.

“Is that a trick question?” I ask with a smirk, trying to ignore the way the thigh-grazing hemline of the frock she’s wearing flashes smooth skin above her boots.

Liz rolls her eyes. “You have a much dirtier mind than you let on, Prince Spencer.”

“Prince, huh?”

Her smile is dazzling. “Yes, you are one, last I heard.”

Striding past the line for the ticket window, I glance over at her. “Pulling out the titles. So very unlike you. You must really want me to win.”

“Don’t we need tickets?” she asks as I approach the ornate doors of the Beaux-Arts style building.

I shake my head and stop before the two men dressed in tuxes. Leaning close, I whisper my name and am immediately allowed access. Since I’m officially not a citizen, I’m allowed access to gamble.

Liz rubs her hands together, “Let’s do this.”

Yeah, let’s do this.
